The Majority Leader of Parliament, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu has disclosed that Nana Akufo Addo might discontinue exercise his executive powers should the Electoral Commission cancel election 2020 owing to Covid-19 pandemic.
Mr Kyei Mensah Bonsu explained while addressing the House that even though the Constitution of the land doesn’t make provision on who becomes president in case of an unforeseen event which will force the EC to halt the general election, the President Nana Akufo-Addo has already made clear that he wouldn’t stay beyond his mandatory term.
He disclosed that the president has revealed that he doesn’t have any intentions of staying as President after January 6, 2021 if the Electoral commission fails to conduct the December 7th elections due to Coronavirus.
“the president doesn’t intend to stay a one day beyond the Constitutional mandate given to him up to the midnight of January 6, 2021 and has strongly urged that whatever must be done in the current circumstances must be done” he stated.
These revelations from the Majority Leader follows after minority leader Haruna Iddrisu questioned the preparedness of the Electoral Commission ahead of the December polls for 2020.
